Medway UTC offers the best of both worlds: students study in a work-like environment while still experiencing all the benefits that traditional schools offer. Our focused curriculum will prepare you for a career in engineering or construction sectors while keeping other career routes open.

Year 10’s and Year 11’s  study traditional GCSE’s along with a Technical curriculum of L2 BTECs.

The Technical Curriculum:

The UTC has technical specialisms in Engineering and Construction & the Built Environment. Students in Years 10 and 11 will follow a programme that includes both of these technical areas (they will be able to choose to specialise in either one of them in the Sixth Form). Within these areas students will take qualifications awarded by BTEC, which is one of the country’s leading awarding bodies and part of the Pearson Group which includes the Edexcel exam board.

Engineering:

In Years 10 and 11 students will follow the BTEC First Certificate in Engineering which is a GCSE-equivalent qualification. The course will include core units which cover the essential areas of engineering including engineering principles, engineering products, engineering information and mathematics for engineering. In addition, students will take additional units which may provide more of a focus on areas like electronics and engineering design.

Construction and the Built Environment:

In Years 10 and 11 students will also follow the BTEC First Certificate in Construction and Built Environment which is a GCSE-equivalent qualification. The course will include core units which cover the essential areas of construction including construction technology, construction and design, interior design, scientific and mathematical applications and sustainability in construction. In addition students will be able to take additional units which may provide a focus on areas such as construction processes and operations, construction drawing techniques and electrical principles and techniques and the construction industry. There will also be an opportunity to explore interior design.

Progression after year 11:

Students who have successfully achieved a C grade or better in five or more GCSEs and have achieved the equivalent of a C or better (Level 2) in their technical qualifications will be able to progress to Medway UTC’s Sixth Form to follow a programme based on A Levels and BTEC National (Level 3) qualifications in either Engineering or Construction & the Built Environment. These are described in more detail here.
