Years 12 and 13

Three routes are available for students studying at Level 3 and they all focus on the UTC’s unique technical specialism and approach to learning. These are described below and whichever is right for you, you will also follow the UTC’s enrichment programme and you will work with our employer partners on challenge projects that build your technical and employability skills. We will discuss with you the programme that meets your own individual needs and supports your future progression.

The applied general route:

This route combines a smaller sized BTEC national qualification in one of the UTC’s technical specialisms through which you will develop your technical skills and knowledge alongside A Levels from the list below. How much of your programme is devoted to the technical qualification and how much to A Levels will vary from individual to individual, but this route offers the opportunity to combine these.

The technical route:

This route includes a focused technical qualification that gives you the chance to develop your skills and knowledge in one of the UTC’s technical specialisms. You will work on employer-led challenge projects which are at the heart of the UTC’s approach to learning. The qualifications you achieve will include: A ‘focused’ technical qualification which will be either: BTEC National qualification in Engineering or BTEC National qualification in Construction and Built Environment Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Level 3 Maths qualification.

The academic route:

This route is for students who want to follow an A Level only programme at the UTC, with a focus on STEM subjects (STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The A Levels we are currently offering include: Mathematics; Chemistry; Physics; Biology; English; Business Studies; Computing; Product Design. Subjects will run subject to demand. Please make contact for further details.

Students who have successfully achieved a grade 4 or better in five or more GCSEs, including English and Maths,  will be able to progress to Medway UTC’s years 12 and 13 to follow a programme based on BTEC National (Level 3) qualifications in either Engineering or Construction & the Built Environment and/or A Levels.

Programmes of study for A Level standard courses  are for students who have achieved at least five grade 5s in appropriate subjects (their may be some flexibility in this).

Students who have achieved grade 4 at GCSE in English and Maths can be given the opportunity to study and retake their GCSE English and Maths exams.
